How To Install A Ceiling Fan

Installing a ceiling fan is quite easy and we are going to share with you some tips on how to install a ceiling fan. Before we move forward with how to install a ceiling fan, you need to identify the exact location for installing the fan. It is always in the dead center of the room because this will help in creating a smooth flow of air. Most homes have a fixture in the ceiling, which can be used for a fan or for lighting purposes.

Now let's look at how to install a ceiling fan. The steps are:

First and foremost: check the clearance. You need to check and mark the floor to ceiling height for the fan blades. The minimum height required is 7'. If you home has a low ceiling then you can increase the height of the fan blade to 10".

Next is mounting the ceiling fan: You will have to mount the ceiling fan in four steps.

  1. First Step: You need to turn the power off to avoid any mishap or electrocution.
  2. Second Step: Find the center
  3. Third Step: Install the junction box, which has to be screwed to the joist. For a ceiling fan, it is recommended that you use only a metal junction box. Based on the size of your ceiling and the electrical codes, you can choose a 3" or 4" octagonal junction box. If your fan is big or heavy then you will require an outlet box weighing at least 35 lbs.
  4. Fourth Step: Mount it on a beamed ceiling.

Fan assembling: How you have to assemble your fan depends on the brand or make of the fan. The manufacturer always provides specific instructions on how to assemble it in their booklet, which is available with the fan itself.

Install a hanger pipe: This pipe is normally placed just above the motor. Once this is in place, you can draw the wires up to the center. You will have to tighten the pipe using set screw.

Attach the blades: The next step is to attach the blades to the body of the fan with the screws provided by the manufacturer.

Mount the fan: Before you mount the fan, make sure that you have installed the hanger bracket, and you have wired the unit. Connect white house wires with white fan wires only and black house wires with black fan wires.

Lastly, ground the fan: You need to ground the fan electrically to the metal box and the grounding wires are normally in green color.
